A Beginner's Guide to Journaling

So, you've decided to dip your toes into the world of keeping a journal. Maybe you bought a fancy notebook with the intention of pouring your heart out on its pristine pages. Maybe you grew up reading Dear America like I did and have been inspired to finally start writing your own entries. But now you find yourself staring at that blank page, unsure of where to start or what to write. Don't worry, we've all been there! Here are a few answers to some of the most burning questions people have about journaling.

What's the Big Deal About Journaling Anyway?

Journaling is like a time machine for your thoughts. It captures your innermost musings, dreams, and rants for future you to look back on and chuckle (or cringe) at. Plus, it's a great way to unload all those thoughts swirling around in your head, giving your mind some much-needed breathing room. I my brain always feels clutter-free after a journaling session.

But What Do I Write About in My Journal?

Anything and everything! Seriously, your journal is your own personal playground. You can jot down your daily adventures, doodle your wildest dreams, or even write a letter to your future self. Feeling stuck? Try starting with a simple gratitude list or a stream-of-consciousness brain dump. If that doesn't do the trick, you can find a list of prompts like this one here. The possibilities are endless!

Sometimes you don't even need to write words at all. Some people are really into junk journaling and never write a single word. They simply glue memorabilia or things they like to look at onto a page. Other wordless entries might include a drawing or doodle a day.

The more you start writing or documenting, the easier it will be to have something to say over time.

Help! I Keep Starting Journals and Never Finishing Them

Ah, the classic journaling conundrum. It's easy to get gung-ho about starting a journal, only to abandon it after a few entries. If that happens, don't beat yourself up about it! Your journal will be waiting for you for the next time. The key is to make journaling a habit, not a chore. Try setting aside a specific time each day to write, whether it's first thing in the morning or right before bed. I keep my journal on my coffee table so it's always accessible when I want to write something down and in sight to remind me I can write. And remember, there's no "wrong" way to journal—just do what feels right for you! Sometimes my own entries are simply a grocery list or to do list for the day.

Forgetting to write in your journal for a day, a week, or a month is not a moral failure. It just means you have a notebook waiting for you when you're ready to pick it back up!

What if I don't have anything to write about?

Still feeling stuck? Here are a few fun journaling prompts to get those creative juices flowing:

  • Write a letter to your past self

  • Write a short story starring your pet (or imaginary pet)
  • What is something most people don't know about you?
  • Write a letter to a loved one
  • List out affirmations for the day
